Accessibility

The standard we aim at

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, level AA. We test with the keyboard alone, with VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, with NVDA on Windows, at 200% zoom and at 400% zoom, and against contrast ratios rather than by eye.

We are not claiming perfection. Where we know something is short of the standard, it is listed under known limitations below rather than left for you to discover.

Using the studio without a mouse or without sight

The Atelier Studio is a five-step form with a live preview. Every decision in it is a real button, a real select or a real text field, and every one can be reached and operated from the keyboard.

• The step rail on the left is a set of buttons, each labelled with its number, its name and what it is for. They are never icons alone.
• Where a method is unavailable, the button is disabled and carries the reason as text. The reason is never conveyed only by the button being grey.
• The character count is a live region: it announces the count, the limit, the characters per line and the number of lines each time it changes, including when you go over the limit.
• The preview carries a full text description that is updated as you configure — what is being cut, where on the piece, at what character height, over how many lines, on how much usable width, and how far it stays clear of the reserved hallmark area.

Keyboard

• A skip link is the first thing in the tab order on every page.
• Focus is always visible: a two-pixel outline in bone white with an offset.
• Positioning the engraving does not require dragging. Focus the preview and use the arrow keys — 0.25 mm per press, 1 mm with shift held. There are also numeric X and Y fields in millimetres, so you can type an exact position. The reserved hallmark area cannot be moved into by either method.
• Nothing is behind a hover-only interaction, and nothing traps focus.
• The cart, checkout and admin flows are ordinary forms with ordinary submit buttons.

Screen readers

• Landmarks: banner, main, contentinfo and named navigation regions on every page.
• One h1 per page, headings in order, and no skipped levels.
• Every image has alt text, or is marked decorative where it carries no information.
• Tables have captions and proper header cells, including the exemption weight and comparison tables.
• The withdrawal-rights notice and the cancellation countdown are announced as alerts, and both carry an icon and a heading as well as colour.
• Form errors are text, adjacent to the field, and associated with it.

Colour and contrast

• Body text is bone white on smoked black at roughly 15:1. Secondary text is above 5:1. Primary buttons are above 7:1.
• The single accent colour is used for warnings only, and never as the only way something is communicated: there is always an icon and words as well.
• The preview draws a surface engraving method fainter than a cut one, because that is honest about the result — the difference is also stated in words on the docket and on the methods page.

Motion

There is very little: a specular highlight that travels across the metal in the preview, a number that rolls when the weight changes, and one flash when a piece crosses the hallmarking threshold. All of it is switched off when your system asks for reduced motion, and none of it conveys information on its own.

The hero video is muted, has no captions to miss because it has no audio and no speech, and can be paused by your browser without losing anything.

Known limitations

• The engraving preview is a drawing, not a photograph of your piece. Its text description is accurate, but it cannot show you how the metal will catch the light.
• On very narrow screens the docket collapses into a bar at the bottom of the studio. The withdrawal-rights notice, the total, the weight and the hallmarking verdict stay visible; the rest is one tap away.
• The uploaded-artwork step needs a file from your device, which some assistive setups make awkward. If it does, email us the file instead and we will attach it to your order by hand.
